2017 Development Approval Timeline And Progress Report

Updated: May 12th, 2024
For a year that included exciting plans like completing Vancouver’s False Creek Seawall with a series of buildings, community spaces, and parkland, it’s hard not to look back at 2017 with disappointment. Whether its large master plans or smaller rezoning applications, that almost 20% of proposals have stalled, or outright failed seems shockingly high. Certainly Hannah and I never would have guessed many of the events we attended would result in little more than our idea to create City Duo.

The spreadsheet below includes the details, and timeline for every rezoning application for this timeframe, from when it was first submitted to when it was ready for occupancy. This includes all notable dates in the rezoning, development application, and the building permit stage, along with details about what each project sought to provide. Obviously we note when/if something was rejected or withdrawn too.

Each of these steps represents a negotiation between our city officials, as well as private, and/or public developers. As such, the review process can grind to a halt simply because an applicant team is unable, or unwilling to move ahead with their vision at that point in time.

You can explore this spreadsheet in detail here.

It’s also important to note that the city’s switch from the old application website to the Shape Your City page in 2020 means some data has been permanently lost, and we’ve done our best to work around that. The addresses, and permit numbers have all been hot-linked, so if you click on them, it’ll take you either to the Shape Your City page or an archived version of the City off Vancouver’s former website.

For those inexperienced with spreadsheets, you can drag the horizontal scroll button to move left and right, or the vertical one to scroll up and down. We hope you find this helpful, any appreciate any comments you may have.
