2016 Development Approval Timeline And Progress Report

Updated: May 12th, 2024
It’s ironic that Hannah and I went to our first public consultation meeting in April 2016, as a month later city council approved the controversial Grandview Woodland Community Plan. Tempers have cooled since then, as that vision has seen little uptake, and is largely regarded by former supporters, and opponents as a failure. Another notable flop was the Dunbar Ryerson redevelopment, yet there were successful individual proposals, including the Butterfly, and Fifteen Fifteen, better known as the Jenga Tower.

The spreadsheet below includes the details, and timeline for every rezoning application for this timeframe, from when it was first submitted to when it was ready for occupancy. This includes all notable dates in the rezoning, development application, and the building permit stage, along with details about what each project sought to provide. Obviously we note when/if something was rejected or withdrawn too.

Each of these steps represents a negotiation between our city officials, as well as private, and/or public developers. As such, the review process can grind to a halt simply because an applicant team is unable, or unwilling to move ahead with their vision at that point in time.

You can explore this spreadsheet in detail here.

As the city transitioned between the “Permit Review and Inspection System Manager” (PRISM) computing system, and the “Public One Stop Service” application (POSSE) in October, 2016 some data is no longer available online. However, we’ve done our best to work around this using the internet archive, and the minutes of various civic bodies. Most addresses, and permit numbers have been hot-linked to the city’s website, though some may lead to an archived version of that webpage, or a development site when clicked.

For those inexperienced with spreadsheets, you can drag the horizontal scroll button to move left and right, or the vertical one to scroll up and down. We hope you find this helpful, any appreciate any comments you may have.
